Water Supply Extension System

Qoryaale is a village of around 800 families, approximately 65km to the south of Burao city, in Somaliland. The population is mostly nomads and the livelihoods of the communities mainly depend on the livestock and merchandising commodities that come from near cities like Burao. The business of the village is mainly containing small shops, few stores, and restaurants which are mostly led by women to manage the lives of their families. The Health and education services are available in the village; which is supported by both NGOs and Government. For the years of long recurrent droughts and pandemics of COVID19, Care International implemented several projects including the distribution of unconditional and conditional cash transfers, and water and sanitation hygiene kits to the crisis-effected communities in the village. Care also supported the two extension classes that were added to the primary school of the village and trained the teachers of both primary and secondary schools as well. Since the Somaliland government named Qoryale village to be a district, also access to basic social services is now going back to normal but water is still remaining a challenge due to a general scarcity of water in the region, there is a growing need for finding a long-term, sustainable water supply system to ensure a safe water supply. While there are not enough water points and an increased number of residents of the village which contributes to the demand for water. Therefore, Th community raised the need for water supply extension and repairing the water kiosk. The community and the VDC have already started to mobilize the community to raise money for the project with the support of CARE and Shaqodoon. The total project cost is $9,750; CARE will be contributed 77% while the community will be contributed 23%. There are also other community members who work with them on the community’s needs and social activities. According to this community project, the Bulshokaab platform online is used to track the transactions of an individual voluntary contribution to the project account. This will increase the transparency and accountability of the project contributions and the trust of the contributors.
