UFEYN ROAD REHABILITATION

Ufeyn is a district in Bari region of Puntland Somalia. Founded in 1958, it is an ancient town. The town is 170 km from Bosaso district and 70km from Kalabayr village. The district is located good grazing lands for animals with beautiful mountains called Almiskat. Ufeyn is growing district with their population increasing too, it si economy depends on livestock, farming, and frankincense and small and medium scale businesses such shops, stores, fuel stations, restaurants and tea cafes and offices of telecommunication companies. It is one of rapidly growing districts in Puntland where necessary social services of health centers, primary and secondary schools, institutions, Police station and others exist this district. Ufeyn is one the districts in Puntland that have custom station for the ministry of finance and the town will be involved in the constructed of a road connecting Kalabayr and Alula. Ufeyn is rich for frankincense, livestock and planting of different crops. The people were affected by drought and covid-19 pandemic. The impact of the covid-19 also affected the people of Ufeyn and surrounding villages as the selling price of their livestock products prices goes down. The community benefited number of CARE implemented SomRep Restore project including distribution farming material and agricultural seed, distribution of cash for work for households,. They also established Village saving and loan associations and provided number of impacted training to village committees. The people in Ufeyn district thanked the assistance they received from CARE and SomRep Restore project. Despite the mentioned the above humanitarian support the people in the Ufeyn are facing road closure during rainy seasons due to valleys near the district and the main point of the poor road is the waterway called Ufeyn sare. The road is currently characterized by deep gullies and requires an off road vehicle to navigate. Travelling to Ufeyn from Bosaso by bus takes about five hours and during rainy seasons the journey can take up to eight hours as roads become impassable with buses and trucks carrying relief food getting stuck. Rehabilitation of the road will be a major boost to the region. Through joint consultation meeting with village stakeholders the community have chosen as a priority project to rehabilitate the road of Ufeyn Sare. The village residents are highly requesting from the local communities, diaspora to support to get school fence. The fundraising committee started mobilizing the community to participate and contribute to the building of this school which is very important for this village and surrounding areas. Ufeyn community and their diaspora are expected to raise $4,592 of contributions to cover the estimation cost of rehabilitation of the road with allocated matching fund of $7,333 from Restore project. Ufeyn community with the district administration selected 7 members of fundraising committee from Business people, Youth, Women and religious man. The impact of the covid-19 also affected the residents of Ufeyn and surrounding villages as the selling price of their livestock products and farms productions goes down. Ufeyn community are requesting support for the side challenges which were facing the past couple of years. The rehabilitation of the road is expected to lower transport time by two hour and lessen travel costs from Bosaso to Ufeyn. Rehabilitation of the road also envisages more development projects to come up in the area as a result of the access route. The community has started rehabilitating the feeder rood. Ufeyn inhabitants expressed optimism that a devolution takes root. EXPECTED RESULT/ BENEFITS. ? Reduced vehicle operating costs for the traffic moving on the road. ? Reduce journey time for goods and passengers ? Reduced transportation cost of freight and passengers along the road. ? Improved quality of riding surface and increased comfort. PRIORITY: Enhance the productivity of high priority sectors and related value chains, including through the rehabilitation and expansion of critical infrastructure for transport, markets access, and trade improvement. We likewise visited and observed the impact of the floods and the situation of the farmers and production of agricultural farms. The Project will use the Bulshokaab platform to track the transactions of the bank accounts and contributions from community members and the diaspora. Through Bulshokaab, members of the public will be able to access these financial transactions by visiting www.Bulshokaab.com. Community contributions amounting to $4,592 are expected to contribute by the residents of Ufeyn and its diaspora.
