QOYTA Water Supply Extension Project

Qoyta is a small village situated 20km from Burao district with an estimated population of 1,500 households. The economy is mainly depending on the small shops and restaurants. The people living in this village are mostly Agri-pastoral community who have small farms and livestock. The delivery of basic social services is generally limited in terms of access to health and education. There is a water borehole funded and drilled by other NGOs which is located a 3km from outside of the village town. Water supply pipelines was established which bringing water to the town with installed water kiosk and elevated water tank. Due to a general scarcity of water in the region, there is a growing need for finding long-term, sustainable water supply system to ensure the safe water supply. The community raised the need for water pipes extension because all residents come together to the water point in the town to fetching water and the livestock also drinks as well. Besides, community affected by recent droughts and low rainfall moved to the village which increased the number of residents in the village; where a two- to five-hour daily walk to fetch household`s water is not uncommon. Collecting water has traditionally been the task of women and girls, who are therefore unable to attend school regularly. However, this is brought to be required to extend water distribution system in order every resident able to get water in their homes by taking a pipe from the main water pipes in the straights. The community committee of the village raised to construct two new water main pipes through the two main straights of the village whereby households can then take small pipes entering to their homes privately. There is a village Development Committee who are responsible for the leading the community development activities. The chairman or head of village who is nominated by the government and he is the chairman of the village committee. This committee is sometimes regarded as village development committee (VDC) who are involved in the community contribution activities. This committee opened a back account for their community contribution. This community project is an example of how, with a small community contribution and the strong commitment of community leaders and members, a safe source of water can be made available for multiple communities.
